Criticized the church for witch hunts in the dark ages?
The man has yet to receive a trial, let alone be charged. What evidences can you provide that the Pontiff protects pedophiles?
>>What evidences can you provide that the Pontiff protects pedophiles?<<
I’ve never seen any, and I make an effort to research these claims. Let’s look at some of the claims made in Buck’s link.
Claim: There was a “confidential letter”
Response: The Latin (the official language of the Church) text appeared on the Vatican website:
An English translation appeared in the January 24, 2002 issue of Origins, a documentary service to which anyone may subscribe:
This English translation appeared on the diocese of Austin’s website, and was then put on bishop-accountability.org
Since we can read it for ourselves, we can see there in nothing in the document indicating it was meant to be confidential.
Claim: The letter states that the church’s jurisdiction ‘begins to run from the day when the minor has completed the 18th year of age’ and lasts for 10 years…Daniel Shea, the lawyer for the two alleged victims who discovered the letter, said: ‘It speaks for itself. You have to ask: why do you not start the clock ticking until the kid turns 18? It’s an obstruction of justice.’
Response: This brings to mind Isaiah 5:20 (“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!)
“Tolling” (suspending the statute of limitations) is for the benefit of the victim, and is standard in cases involving minors. In the U.S., statutes of limitations for the sexual abuse of minors vary from state to state, and the Vatican’s statute of limitations (suspended until the victim is 18, and then running for 10 years, which was doubled to 20 years in 2010) is within the range, so the idea the Vatican is being unreasonable or sinister is nonsense.
Claim: “secret tribunals”; “it was designed to prevent the allegations from…being investigated by the police.”
Response: Isaiah 5:20 again. People seem to be thrown by the word “secret.” We need to keep in mind the official language of the Catholic Church is Latin, not modern American English. A better translation would be “confidential.” Why does the Church have laws to ensure confidentiality? To cover-up? No! The Church has these laws for the same reason U.S. states have these laws:
“Many states have laws to protect the confidentiality of victims of crime. Most of these laws relate to specific groups of victims: sexual assault victims, domestic violence victims, abused or neglected elderly or disabled adults, missing persons, hate crime victims, and child victims. Confidentiality laws exist to encourage the reporting of offenses, and to prevent the re-victimization of the crime victim through publicity, unwarranted intrusion upon the victim’s privacy, and insensitive treatment by the media.”
In 1991, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo signed legislation that prohibited public officials in New York from disclosing the names of alleged rape victims, stating, “The release of such identifying information does not serve the interest of justice. Indeed, it does a gross disservice to both the victim and the public.”
No sane person would claim secular laws that protect the confidentiality of victims are designed to prevent allegations from being investigated by the police.
One thing i’ve learned if i never learn nothing again is those who hate the Catholic Church that no answer or explanation given will ever satisfy them nor quell there anger at the Church. The fact is and i believe a well known writer had written, if the Catholic Church was not against divorce, abortion birth control, same sex marriage and sex and was more agreeable with the current and past morals of the world she would be tolerated even with charges of priest guilty of pedophilia. If you doubt me look at our school teachers do you see any one wanting to destroy the school system and there are more reports of teachers being charged with pedophilia and other improper sexual conduct with students every year than ever was with the Catholic Church.
Facts have have come to light showing that Ratzinger intentionally hid facts, moved priests to other dioceses, and blamed local officials and employees (not associated with the Church) instead of focusing on the priests
Pope Benedict XVI faced claims last night he had ‘obstructed justice’ after it emerged he issued an order ensuring the church’s investigations into child sex abuse claims be carried out in secret.
The order was made in a confidential letter, obtained by The Observer, which was sent to every Catholic bishop in May 2001.
It asserted the church’s right to hold its inquiries behind closed doors and keep the evidence confidential for up to 10 years after the victims reached adulthood. The letter was signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was elected as John Paul II’s successor last week.
Hey, I am still waiting for justice to be served on that Milan Lucic attack on Ryan Miller.
Oh well, it’s Boston and those Catholic ref’s protect their own there too, eh?
Its all over the news , easily within the grasp of your fingertips. He was informed and he did nothing…wait , we are talking about the Pope, right?
we know that he protects the pedos but since he is so good at it we dont have any evidence yet
