What popular teen books have a strong female character that could be a good role model?

Like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter or Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games.
I need to read more books that have strong female characters in them.
I really dislike characters like Bella Swan from Twilight, the damsels in distress types.

Maximum Ride, from the Maximum Ride series (by James Patterson), is smart and is definitely not a damsel in distress. Summary: The books are about six or seven kids and teens who were genetically engineered to be 98% human, 2% bird. Basically, they have wings. The series is a fast paced action thriller type of book.

Alanna, from the Lioness Quartet (by Tamora Pierce), is smart, capable, and brave. Summary: The books are structured around a medieval country, Tortall. It is customary for men to become knights (or mages/sorcerers), and the women to be wives/mothers. Alanna and her twin, Thom, don’t want to follow the normal way of life. Alanna pretends that she is a boy, named Alan, and her brother goes to the convent where they instruct young apprentice mages.

Dicey, from the Homecoming series (by Cynthia Voigt), is a strong, brave character. Summary: Her family is poor and her mom is single (the dad left them). Her mom takes them to the mall but then has some sort of amnesia and forgets about them. Dicey, the oldest (13 years old), has to lead her family to their aunt’s house. They have $11 to get them there, and it takes them a few weeks.

Meg, from A Wrinkle in Time (by Madeleine L’Engle), is stubborn and smart. Summary: Meg longs for her father, who has mysteriously disappeared. She becomes friends with fellow student Calvin O’Keefe, who joins Meg and Charles Wallace in traveling by tesseract to other planets and provides Meg much-needed emotional support. Together they rescue Dr. Murry on the dark planet Camazotz. Meg ultimately rescues Charles Wallace from Camazotz as well, not through her own intelligence or strength but simply by loving him.

Tris, from Divergent (by Veronica Roth), is smart, brave, and selfless. Summary: Tris lives in a world where there are five factions: Abnegation (Selfless), Dauntless (Brave), Erudite (Smart), Candor (Honest), and Amity (Peaceful). At the age of 16, you pick your faction based on the apitude test you had a few days before. For almost everyone, the apitude test gives one result, which they then choose. However, Tris’s results are inconclusive. She could be part of the Erudite, the Dauntless, or the Abnegation. She is Divergent. After she chooses, she discovers an Erudite plot to take control of their city, and crazy stuff happens.

Hope this helps!

Definetly read the Abhorsen trilogy and the Sevenwaters trilogy. Also you may like books by Lynne Flewelling, not all feature women as the main character, but all do have a very strong female supporting cast. These are fantasy novels. Rita Mae Brown has some cool books if you like mysteries/horses.

Look up Tamora Pierce too, her books may be aimed at a younger audience than you, I’m not sure. But when I was a girl this was the author that above all others made me feel like I could be worth something despite the discrimination I faced as a woman.

Tamora Pierce is a good option, particularly the Tortall books. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, which you should not judge by the movie! The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede are also good.

Divergent by Veronica Roth(Tris-never turns down a challenge)
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead(Rose-enough to say she fights some really bad vampires)
Darkness becomes her by Keally Keaton(Ari-knows to kick *** real well)
Angellfall by Susan Ee(Penryn-that girl is really determined to get her sister back no mater what or who she must go through)
That’s it for know, there are really good books out there…Happy reading!

Rose from the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
The girl literally kicks vampire ***. She’s a sarcastic ***** who stands up for herself and people she loves and has dedicated her life to protecting her best friend.

Maximum ride by james patterson.
Max is smart, funny and like the mother figure of the group. It also has moral decisions during it she has to make. Highly reccommend it
