Arabic/Middle eastern Vocal Sounds/Music?

What is it called when Arabic/middle eastern women are used in soundtracks like passion of Christ or in sad/creepy moments and they use this wierd cool chilling vocal sound like a long note. What is it called? What type of music is it? I’ve been searching but can’t find it. It’s like a chilling vocal…

I don’t know of a name for it. I do know Gladiator was the film that started the trend. It’s a beautiful sound, though… I have such a fascination with the music of the Middle East, I wish I could play like that.

I also have never discovered if the genre you describe has a name, but am a big fan.
Am not positive if the following is part of the style you seek, but you might listen to the track clip/samples for the singer Azam Ali here: http://www.amazon.com/Night-Edge-Day-Aza…
I’m a fan of a lot of her work, which she has released solo under her own name, plus as a member of the groups Vas and Niyaz.

Lisa Gerrard (Australian) is not Arabic/middle Eastern, but her work ends up in quite a few films (Gladiator, Man on Fire, and others)
One of my favorite Gerrard pieces was used in Black Hawk Down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7HKktNbU…
From Man on Fire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c1x55t51…

You may also want to check out Natacha Atlas, though a significant chunk of her work is more upbeat/pop. http://www.amazon.com/Diaspora-Natacha-Atlas/dp/B000002P4L/ref=sr_1_7?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1330661117&sr=1-7

They are Arabic Mijana-Ataba type of Sahara music. A more recent type is the Islamic Nasheed… may be wrong but look these up.

I don’t know what it is called but is it like Love Theme by Jacki Presti?
